I would give two important qualifiers for a hipster:
1. A pick-and-choose approach to pop culture. Hipsters aren't a closed subculture like many past subcultures, that have centered around one specific style or one specific style of music. I've met hipsters that have a distinctevly hip-hop look, a rock look, a casual/football hooligan look etc. etc. And with music, it's a constant race to see who finds the next big thing, and that forgotten gem. Tell-tale sign "I listen to all kinds of music, lately I've been really into ____"

Only hipsters join private trackers, because hipsters are smug gits who want to be better and more cool and elite than everyone else.
